Based on field research at three proposed resettlement locations, the report identifies several areas where the actual sites lack adequate water, sufficient grazing land, and other infrastructure promised by the government. The sites are also not equipped to provide healthcare, education, and other social services that were supposed to be a part of the plan. Local, non-Maasai residents also say they were never consulted about receiving the resettled Maasai population and the report identifies an increased risk of conflict because of the plan, pointing to one resettlement that has already seen conflict over limited water and grazing resources. The report alleges that the influx of Maasai from NCA would only add to the chance of conflict. The Oakland Institute is calling on the Tanzanian government to stop the eviction plans and to give the Maasai more decision making power. It also calls on UNESCO to use its leverage to help the Maasai. Das Exekutivdirektorium des Internationalen Währungsfonds (IWF) hat eine Nothilfe in Höhe von 567 Mio. USD für Tansania bewilligt, um das Land bei der Finanzierung einer COVID-19-Impfkampagne und der Bewältigung der Gesundheits- und Sozialkosten der Pandemie zu unterstützen, so der IWF in einer Erklärung.
Der Ausbruch von COVID-19 und die damit verbundenen Reisebeschränkungen haben zum Zusammenbruch des Tourismussektors in dem ostafrikanischen Land geführt, das die Existenz der Pandemie unter dem verstorbenen Präsidenten John Magufuli geleugnet hatte. Nach dessen Tod im März und der Amtsübernahme durch Präsidentin Samia Suluhu Hassan hat Tansania begonnen, die Krise anzuerkennen, die zu einer deutlichen Verlangsamung des Wachstums auf 4,8 Prozent im Jahr 2020 führte, wobei das Wachstum auch 2021 gedämpft bleiben wird.

Das Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) erklärte am Dienstag, es habe Maßnahmen ergriffen, um Giraffen vor der Ausbreitung einer Hautkrankheit zu retten. 12 Halsbänder sollen Giraffen, die von der Hautkrankheit im Ruaha-Nationalpark befallen sind, überwachen und behandeln. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Pilotprojekt.
Der gegenwärtige Bestand liegt bei ca. 33 000 Giraffen. Im Jahr 2020 startete TAWIRI einen Fünfjahresplan zur Rettung der Giraffen vor dem Aussterben. Der Strategieplan für den Zeitraum 2020-2024 zielt darauf ab, die schwindende Zahl der Giraffen wieder aufzufüllen.
Die Fragmentierung des Lebensraums, die Abholzung der Wälder und die Wilderei stellen nach wie vor eine Bedrohung für das Überleben der Giraffe dar.

Die Politisierung der Rückverfolgung der Herkunft des neuartigen Coronavirus ist nicht hilfreich bei der Bekämpfung des hochansteckenden COVID-19, das durch dieses Virus verursacht wird, sagte Dr. Elisha Osati, ehemaliger Präsident der Medical Association of Tanzania, und wies darauf hin, dass die Welt bei der Bekämpfung der Pandemie zusammenarbeiten sollte.
In Tansania ist die Impf-Kampagne angelaufen. Es ist eine wichtige Abkehr von der Corona-Politik des verstorbenen Präsidenten Magufuli, der die Gefahr des Virus leugnete und gegen die Vakzine hetzte.

Die tansanische Präsidentin Samia Suluhu Hassan bestätigte am Mittwoch die Tötung von drei Polizeibeamten und einem Wachmann eines privaten Sicherheitsunternehmens durch einen bewaffneten Angreifer an der Selander-Brücke entlang der Ali Hassan Mwinyi Road am Nachmittag in der Handelshauptstadt Dar es Salaam.
"Der Angreifer wurde unter Kontrolle gebracht, und ich habe die Polizei angewiesen, den Vorfall umfassend zu untersuchen", sagte das Staatsoberhaupt. Simon Sirro, Tansanias Polizeichef, sagte einem lokalen Radiosender, dass der Angreifer ebenfalls von der Polizei erschossen wurde.
Der Anschlag ereignete sich kurz nachdem Präsident Hassan vor hochrangigen Polizeibeamten gesprochen und sie aufgefordert hatte, den Kampf gegen die grenzüberschreitende organisierte Kriminalität, einschließlich Terrorismus und Drogenhandel, zu verstärken.

Tansania hat angekündigt, dass Mütter im schulpflichtigen Alter ab dem nächsten Jahr wieder in die Schule aufgenommen werden können.
Im Jahr 2017 wurde Tansanias ehemaliger Präsident John Magufuli für seine Äußerungen weltweit kritisiert, dass Mädchen, die ein Kind zur Welt bringen, nicht in die Schule zurückkehren können sollten. 2018 zog die Weltbank einen 500-Millionen-Dollar-Kredit (359 Millionen Pfund) an Tansania zurück, der für die Bildung bestimmt war, weil diese Politik nach Ansicht von Frauengruppen und Pädagogen gegen internationale Menschenrechtskonventionen verstößt.
Das tansanische Bildungsministerium hat nun nach Beratungen mit der Weltbank zugestimmt, dass Mütter im Teenageralter den Unterricht an den so genannten Folk Development Colleges besuchen dürfen, die landesweit Grundkenntnisse in Rechnen und Lesen vermitteln.
Das Schulverbot von 2002 wurde allerdings nicht aufgehoben.
Tansania hat eine $5,2 Mio. schwere Goldraffinerie in Betrieb genommen, die sicherstellen soll, dass das Land kein Rohgold mehr exportiert. Die Mwanza Precious Metals Refinery Fabrik hat eine Kapazität von 480 kg Gold pro Tag und ist eine von drei neuen Fabriken in Tansania. Die Fabrik, die die größte in der ostafrikanischen Region sein soll, wird voraussichtlich Einnahmen für Tansania durch Abgaben und Lizenzgebühren bringen. Es wird auch erwartet, dass sie mehr als 100 direkte Arbeitsplätze und über 300 indirekte Arbeitsplätze für Tansanier*innen schafft. Die Fabrik ist eine Partnerschaft zwischen der tansanischen Regierung - die einen Anteil von 25 % hält - und anderen Investoren.
Die tansanische Präsidentin Samia Suluhu Hassan hat die Zentralbank des Landes aufgefordert, auf die Verwendung digitaler Währungen vorbereitet zu sein. Präsident Samia sagte der Bank von Tansania am Sonntag, sie solle angesichts des steigenden Interesses und der Annahme von Kryptowährungen rund um den Globus wachsam sein.
"Ich weiß, dass viele Länder auf der ganzen Welt digitale Währungen noch nicht akzeptiert oder angefangen haben, sie zu benutzen. Dennoch fordere ich die Bank of Tanzania auf, sich mit diesen Entwicklungen zu befassen, um vorbereitet zu sein.
"Wir wollen nicht unvorbereitet sein oder später herausfinden, dass unsere Bürger uns voraus sind und bereits mit der Nutzung von Kryptowährungen begonnen haben", sagte sie.
El Salvador wurde letzte Woche das erste Land der Welt, das eine digitale Währung, Bitcoin, offiziell als legale Währung klassifiziert hat.

Eine Arbeitsgruppe, die zur Überprüfung der Covid-19-Protokolle in Tansania gebildet wurde, hat der Regierung empfohlen, ein Massenimpfungsprogramm gegen die Pandemie in Betracht zu ziehen. Sie betonten jedoch, dass die Impfung freiwillig sein sollte.
Das Komitee schlug vor, dass die Behörden die Impfstoffe besorgen und mit speziellen Gruppen beginnen sollten, wie z.B. Ärzten, Menschen, die im Tourismussektor arbeiten und älteren Menschen. Die Gesundheits-Task-Force, die von Präsidentin Samia Suluhu Hassan gebildet wurde, um die Regierung über den besten Umgang mit der Coronavirus-Pandemie zu beraten, hat der Regierung auch geraten, Informationen über das Coronavirus öffentlich zu machen. Das letzte Mal, dass Tansania eine Covid-19-Statistik herausgegeben hat, ist fast ein Jahr her. Die 14-köpfige Arbeitsgruppe hat 19 Empfehlungen ausgearbeitet, eine davon ist, die Impfung freiwillig zu machen. Das Team riet der Regierung auch, auf eine dritte Welle des Virus gut vorbereitet zu sein. Das Komitee hat den Bericht am Montagnachmittag im State House in Dar es Salaam an Präsidentin Samia übergeben und wartet auf ihre Zustimmung.
Präsident Samias neue Herangehensweise an die Pandemie unterscheidet sich stark von der ihres Vorgängers, des verstorbenen John Magufuli, der zu Massengebeten aufgerufen hatte, um die Pandemie zu besiegen.
Am Sonntag sagte die meteorologische Behörde in Tansania jedoch, der Zyklon habe sich schnell abgeschwächt, als er sich der Küste näherte - und die vorhergesagten Folgen trafen nicht ein. Sie sagte, dass ein großer Teil der mit dem Zyklon erwarteten verstärkten Regenfälle im Ozean fiel und seine negativen Auswirkungen, die an Land zu sehen gewesen wären, reduzierte.

Tansanias Regierung hat grünes Licht für den Bau der East African Crude Oil Pipeline gegeben, ein 1.445km langes Projekt, das sich von der Küstenregion Tanga bis nach Uganda erstreckt.
Der Energieminister des Landes, Dr. Medard Kalemani, erklärte gegenüber Journalisten, dass der Verhandlungsprozess, der im Mai 2017 begonnen hatte, endlich abgeschlossen sei. Damit ist der Weg frei für den Start der 3,55 Mrd. $ teuren Pipeline. Es wird erwartet, dass zwischen 10.000 und 15.000 Arbeitsplätze geschaffen werden, sobald das Projekt anläuft. Letzte Woche unternahm Tansanias Präsidentin Samia Suluhu Hassan ihre erste Auslandsreise nach Uganda, um die Unterzeichnung des Abkommens mit ihrem ugandischen Amtskollegen zu begleiten. Nach Fertigstellung wird das Projekt die längste beheizte Rohölpipeline der Welt sein.

Es wurde kein offizieller Grund für seinen Tod genannt, aber es kam fast drei Wochen nachdem seine Partei sagte, dass er an Covid-19 erkrankt sei. Herr Masoud war zuvor in hohen Positionen in der Regierung Sansibars tätig, unter anderem als Generalstaatsanwalt.
Hulda Swai, eine tansanische Professorin für Biowissenschaften und Bioengineering, wurde 2020 zur Preisträgerin des African Union Kwame Nkrumah Continental Awards for Scientific Excellence erklärt. Ihre Arbeit mit der Nanotechnologie hat dazu beigetragen, wirksamere Medikamente gegen Malaria zu erforschen. In Zusammenarbeit mit der Weltbank hat sie geholfen Millionen von Dollar zur Finanzierung afrikanischer Forscher zu sichern.
"Ich nutze die Nanotechnologie, die meine Ausbildung und mein Fachwissen ist, um die Verfügbarkeit bestehender Kräuterextrakte zu verbessern, die sehr wirksam sind, denen es aber zum Beispiel an Löslichkeit fehlt", sagte sie dem BBC-Radioprogramm Focus on Africa.
Prof. Swai erhielt die prestigeträchtige Auszeichnung zusammen mit einem Geldpreis von $20.000. Sie erzählte Esau Williams von BBC Focus on Africa, was sie motiviert hat, eine Karriere in der Wissenschaft einzuschlagen und wie sie hofft, andere Frauen auf diesem Gebiet zu inspirieren. "Wissenschaft ist nicht so schwierig, das ist nur ein Mythos. Frauen sind genauso gut wie Männer", sagt sie.
