Introduction

Football 4 WASH, an initiative of Viva con Agua Uganda in partnership with Watoto Wasoka, involves the use of the power of the world’s most popular sport, Football to tackle one of the world’s biggest community issues, WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene).

It is an innovative approach to sensitisation through engaging learners in exciting football exercises called “drills” with various messages of WASH.

The programme not only involves trainings, outreaches and workshops on the Football 4 WASH drills but also tournaments where pupils get tested in their WASH skills and knowledge.

Berna (VcA Uganda) explaining her workshop

Our friend Steven (Welthungerhilfe) talking about F4W.

Few impressions from a workshop by Watoto Wasoka

Used potentials:

1.Activate through physical activity.

2.Connect through community and regional outreaches.

3.Sensitize  through WASH education.

4.Transform  through joyful learning.

 "Drill" Example

Set – Up:

Ptws.png

A cone in the middle is surrounded by a small square of cones and a bigger

circle of 8 – 10 cones. The inner square is the defensive ring where 4

players try to protect the ball from knocking the inner cone. The outer ring

is bigger and has more players who are trying to hit the inner cone using

footballs.

WASH representation:

The inner cone represents the water source which must be protected.

The inner square forms a ring protecting the water source. The outer ring represents the community that use and contaminate the water source with

all kinds of germs/contaminants.

Progression:

The drill can be adjusted by increasing the footballs in the

outer ring, or increasing/decreasing the distance between the defensive

and attacking rings. The coach may also increase/decrease the number of

attackers/defenders. Swap the defenders and shooters. Shooting should be

low not to hurt the defenders.

School Challenge

WASH Challenges are interschool WASH related friendly competitions that ensure that schools have an incentive to implement what they learn from the WASH activities they are taught. WASH challenges [could] include; Cleanest School, most active WASH club, best WASH exercise;

Cleanest School:

This simply refers to the compound and classrooms. While it is not the WASHclub’s responsibility alone to keep the school clean, it should take it as its responsibility to ensure that all the students in the school are involved in this by creatively designing ways to encourage their friends to keep the school clean.

Most active WASH:

club: this will be visible based on the creative efforts the WASHclubs put into ensuring the school is not only clean but also involved in several WASH related activities in the school. This therefore means that while school A might win “Cleanest school” they are not guaranteed to win “most active WASH club”

Best WASH exercise:

WASH clubs will be given the opportunity to also come up with a drill that will be included in the WASH MANUAL. The teachers are requested to only play a supervisory role. The final list will be forwarded to a panel who will select the best drills. The above challenges are very student centered, meant to encourage students to really feel they are responsible and have the power and capacity to create change.

Benefits

As of today, we have a toilet block at Qatar Primary School, rainwater harvesting system at Kiro Ndeeba Primary School and a water tower at Godwins Primary School, all courtesy of the Football4WASH program funded by Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli. At the moment there are four more schools getting facilities like toilets, rainwater harvesting systems and a borehole and pump system.

The Football4WASH program also aims at contributing to ensuring access to safe drinking water and has now availed 84 XL Spouts Water filters to 24 different schools in and around Kampala. To guarantee a save use of the water filters, there are also hand washing facilities provided.
